Sorbitol

Sorbitol is a sugar substitute with around half the sweetness of sucrose. It is produced by chemical extraction from glucose, and also occurs naturally in some fruits including apples and pears. Sorbitol helps food stay moist, making it a useful ingredient in confectionery, baked goods and chocolate. It is also often used in diet foods and sugar-free chewing gum.
